Farnsley Middle School Athletics recently launched its Parent Playbook Series: Beyond the Game, bringing together families, educators, and community leaders for an important conversation about youth sports, academics, and long-term development. The first session, “Chasing Dreams, Staying Grounded,” focused on helping families better understand the realities of athletic opportunities while emphasizing the importance of academics, character, and life skills. The evening featured a distinguished panel of speakers who shared their experiences and perspectives with Farnsley families: Bilal Powell, former University of Louisville standout and 9-year NFL veteran with the New York Jets Coach Brentton Ervin, Defensive Line Assistant Coach at the University of Louisville Mrs. Ira Ebbs, retired JCPS Principal, former Counselor and current 7th Grade Math Teacher at Farnsley Throughout the discussion, panelists spoke candidly about the journey of student-athletes and the role families play in shaping that journey. One of the most powerful messages of the evening was the reminder that while sports can open doors, education is what keeps them open. Panelists emphasized that academic discipline, strong character, and positive habits are essential for student-athletes who aspire to compete at higher levels. From a college recruiting perspective, Coach Ervin explained that talent alone is not enough. Coaches look closely at a student-athlete’s work ethic, behavior, academic performance, and reputation both in the classroom and in the community. Former NFL running back Bilal Powell shared powerful insights from his own journey, reminding families how rare it is to reach the professional level and encouraging parents to focus on preparing their children for life, not just sports. He also spoke openly about the importance of mental health and the pressures many athletes face as expectations increase. Panelists encouraged families to focus on building strong habits early — including work ethic, accountability, communication, and academic responsibility. Middle school athletics, they emphasized, should be about developing a strong foundation and enjoying the game, not chasing exposure or scholarships. Parents were also reminded of the importance of allowing children to pursue the activities they truly enjoy rather than placing pressure on them to fulfill someone else’s dreams. The event reinforced Farnsley Athletics’ mission: to prepare student-athletes for high school academically and athletically while developing character, leadership, and life skills that extend beyond sports. The Parent Playbook Series will continue with additional sessions designed to support families as they navigate youth athletics and student development. At Farnsley, we believe that when families, educators, and coaches work together, we create an environment where student-athletes can thrive — in the classroom, in competition, and in life.
